The New Greenfield Dera Ismail Khan (Yarik) International Airport is a major upcoming mega-infrastructure project in Pakistan. Designed to serve as a massive multi-provincial aviation and logistics hub, the project is backed by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework to shift the economic and freight dynamics of the region.
While the existing historical D.I. Khan Airport (DSK) was successfully rehabilitated for domestic ATR flights, its runway constraints make it impossible to host commercial wide-body jets.
To address this, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) initiated the development of a completely new, state-of-the-art Greenfield International Cargo & Passenger Airport. Located near Yarik, this airport is strategically positioned at the exact geographic junction connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Balochistan.
Strategic Impact: The project creates a modern land-to-air trade corridor, connecting directly to the M-14 Motorway. This provides regional supply chains with immediate access to international markets, cutting dependence on the traditional Lahore-Karachi logistics monopoly.
The Yarik Greenfield Airport is uniquely designed to act as a global freight gateway. By establishing a massive Special Economic Zone (SEZ) directly attached to the customs tarmac, it functions as an alternative land-to-air global trade corridor, bypassing traditional maritime transit backlogs.
The surrounding regions are highly agricultural but suffer from steep supply chain losses due to prolonged ground transit. The dedicated cargo facilities are projected to recover 20% to 30% of agricultural spoilage by giving local fruit, vegetable, and livestock farmers a direct route to export markets in the Gulf and Central Asia.
Due to the unique topography of Dera Ismail Khan, the master plan incorporates specialized civil engineering designs to protect the massive 1,817-acre facility from historic "Rod Kohi" (flash hill torrent) flood patterns characteristic of the Sulaiman Mountain range runoff.
The civil aviation footprint will directly serve an unmapped catchment area of over five million people across southern KP, northern Balochistan, and western Punjab, who previously had to travel 5–7 hours by road to reach Islamabad or Lahore for international departures.
